Getting Married in Cyprus

Civil marriage at a Cyprus municipality — including when neither of you is Cypriot or resident here.

Typical appointment: 45 min

Cyprus is a common choice for couples marrying away from home, and the ceremony itself is simple. Both of you apply in person to the Marriage Officer at the municipality you choose, each swears there is no impediment to the marriage, and after the notice period the ceremony takes place with two witnesses. The complication is the paperwork from your own countries, and specifically its shelf life. The documents you need are valid for different periods — some for six months, some for two, some for one. Couples routinely gather everything over three months and discover the first certificate expired before the last one arrived. We work out the order to request things in, based on both nationalities, so nothing dies while you wait for something else.

Frequently asked

It depends on the document. A no-marriage certificate from your home country typically runs six months, while a Cyprus non-impediment certificate runs two and a court affidavit one. This is why the order matters.
