Renewal filed before expiry, with the documents that have changed since last time.

Renewal is not a formality. Bank statements have to be current, the rental agreement may have changed, insurance has to still be valid, and some certificates expire faster than the permit itself.
The one thing that can't be fixed afterwards is timing. File while the current permit is valid.
